A Wolves fan with a surname which is synonymous with the club’s illustrious history is taking part in this year’s Molineux Abseil for Wolves Foundation – in memory of her late father.

Wendy Cullis lost her Dad Barry – who was universally known as Stan – back in December of 2023, seven years after being diagnosed with cancer.

Known by everyone at the hospital as Stan, in his final weeks he was sent some gifts from Wolves and was also set to receive a call from a former player, only to sadly pass away before it could be arranged.

Now, nearly two years on, Wendy has decided she wants to give something back, not just in memory of her Dad, but also her sister Lorna, who was also lost to cancer.

“I think my Dad was actually a distant relative of the man himself, I think they might have been second cousins, and he was known as Stan, especially by the staff in the hospital at the end of his life,” says Wendy.

“I don’t think the name ever leaves us – every person we meet in Wolverhampton asks us if we knew Stan, and it’s something to treasure really!

“The club were great in sending Dad a letter and some gifts, and when I saw this event come up, I felt like I wanted to repay the favour and that compassion, as well as do something to remember him, and also my sister Lorna.

“As a family, I thought it would be a good way to pay tribute and help us move forward, whilst also raising money for Wolves Foundation.”

It won’t be the first time Wendy has taken part in an abseil.  She has completed a couple previously.

But this one might actually be from the greatest height!

“I have done a couple of abseils before, including from off the Tarmac building, and a viaduct, but looking at the top of the Billy Wright Stand, they weren’t as high!” she admits.

“And before there was a wall to bounce against!

“But I am definitely looking forward to the challenge, it’s a really nice thing to do and I am sure I’ll have plenty of support!”

Wendy, who works for American business consultants Andrew Reise, will be taking part alongside her good friend, Michelle Venables.
