Students on Wolves Foundation’s further education programmes were able to enjoy an invaluable enrichment morning at the Compton Park training ground before the end of the season, thanks to Wolves Women manager Dan McNamara.
The groups from the Football & Education College Academy at the City of Wolverhampton College, and Football & Sixth Form Academy at Our Lady & St Chad Catholic Academy, took part in a workshop delivered by McNamara, before put through their paces by enjoying a coaching session.
The activation formed just one of the additional enrichment opportunities which students enjoy alongside their studies for a BTEC qualification, which can also be incorporated with A-levels at Our Lady & St Chad’s.
“Both of these courses provide so many different strands of education relating to sport, and we have previously seen students either go on to continue their studies via a sport-related degree, or obtain employment within teaching, sports coaching and some within Wolves Foundation,” says Brad Moore, post-16 education & skills manager at Wolves Foundation.
“Another huge positive is that, in addition to the academic and practical learning, there are also numerous enrichment opportunities during the year, notably having the chance to play fixtures against other club community organisations (CCOs) from the EFL and Premier League.
“Opponents include the likes of CCO’s from Liverpool, Manchester City, Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, and the programme offers a really positive experience of competitive football.
“And then there are enrichment opportunities like this one, being able to come to the training ground and receive some really valuable advice and guidance from Dan McNamara.

“Dan delivered an excellent workshop about leadership in sport, discussing different leadership and communication styles, whilst also giving an insight into his career both with the Royal Air Force and the elite women’s game.
“It was a fantastic morning and one which gave the students a valuable learning experience and plenty of food for thought relating to their future careers.”
One of those students from St Chad’s was Maxwell, who was delighted to have had the opportunity to take part in the enrichment.
“It was great to learn about Dan McNamara’s journey through football and linking it with the RAF was something I didn’t think was possible,” he said.
“The whole session was a really good experience and another positive about being on the course.
“I really enjoy the course especially the football elements, and it is helping prepare be for hopefully enjoying a career in sport in the future.”

Crystal, coming to the end of her first year of the programme at the City of Wolverhampton College, was actually previously a participant on the Foundation’s Premier League Kicks project.
“I think the whole experience was very good and motivating,” she said.
“It was very interesting to hear from Macca about the journey he has been on with RAF to get to the position he is in now.
“I also thought the coaching session was very fun and it was at a very good intensity.
“The college programme overall is amazing as so many different opportunities are provided for us.”
